Vitoria Guimaraes – CD Tondela
Vitoria Guimaraes welcome CD Tondela to Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques tonight’s in a decider of who will enter the group stages of the Portuguese League Cup. Guimaraes have had a really promising pre-season where they in five games have managed four wins and a draw.
They have invested wisely during the summer and the feeling is that this is the best Guimaraes squad in several years. The visitor’s boss Pepa compared them to Braga and even mentioned them in the same breath as Benfica and Porto. While that might be a stretch Guimaraes manager Luis Castro seems to have built something really interesting, and almost everyone expects them to at least improve on last year’s ninth place finish.
CD Tondela did well to stay out of the relegation battle last season after just about managing to stay in the division during the previous two campaigns. It will be interesting to see what kind of Tondela we will see this season, but the pre-season has at least been decent. They have been a bit unlucky in terms of injuries though as Ricardo Costa and Icardo Silva first went down just to be followed by new striker Sergio Peña and then João Mendes.
With that said, it’s a rather depleted side that travel to Guimaraes tonight and we don’t think that will be good enough to get anything from this match.
