Barnet had to settle for a goalless draw in their season opener away to Aldershot, despite having several chances to win the game. That was manager John Still’s first league game in charge; a game that also saw several new faces in the Barnet squad. Both manager and players can be happy with their effort and there were plenty of positives to take from that performance.
Tonight they welcome newly promoted Braintree to The Hive Stadium and for us this is a game with only one favourite. Despite being relegated from League Two last season, the Bees did quite well at home and in the National League it will not be easy for anyone to take anything away from a visit here.
The home side will be without Ricardo Santos, Mauro Vilhete and Harry Taylor but could have striker Dave Tarpey ready.
Braintree were promoted through playoffs last season and could find life in the National League hard to cope with. They really struggled in their first league game, a 0-2 defeat at home to Halifax, in a game were the winning margin for the guests certainly could have been greater if it wasn’t for Iron’s debutant keeper, Ben Killip, who pulled off five or six fantastic saves.
It will take some time for the young and inexperienced Braintree players to settle to the pace of the National League, and we don’t think they are ready for any points quite yet, especially not here.
