Basel vs Maccabi Tel-Aviv
Basel have been doing really well in Europe in recent years and the 37 500 capacity St. Jakob-Park is a dreaded place for any (yep, any) team in Europe to go to. Urs Fischer has been appointed new coach in place of Paulo Sousa who left for Fiorentina during the summer. There seems to be no drop in performance though as they are eight for eight in all competitions this season. Fischer has done some good business during the summer, picking up Austrian ace Marc Janko on a free. That could well prove to be the signing of the season as he’s already on three goals after three league outings. They have also added Iceland international Birkir Bjarnason to the ranks. The former Sampdoria midfielder scored 12 times for Pescara last season and could prove to be a shrewd signing. Tonights clash against Maccabi Tel-Aviv is one they would expect to win and they won’t be satisfied with anything less than a 2 goal margin going into the away tie.
Maccabi Tel-Aviv are this season under the guidance of Slavisa Jokanovic, the man who guided Watford to the Premier League last season. The team is made up of mostly Israeli players with new signing Tal Ben Haim the most noticeable. Ben Haim might have the experience but the 33-year old undoubtedly has his best years behind him. Getting anything from this away tie seems like a very tall task.
