Forest Green Rovers have gone through big changes since Ecotricity owner Dale Vince became the club’s majority shareholder and chairman in 2010. A steady progress in the last couple of years has increased their status in the league and they were seen as one of the favourites for promotion last season. However it wasn’t to be as Bristol Rovers denied them a trip to the play-off final with a 3-0 aggregate semi final win. This season Forest Green are once again fancied for promotion and manager Ady Pennock has made some good signings during the summer to improve the squad. In the season opener they secured 3 points with a narrow win away to Altrincham, with veteran striker and last year’s top scorer Jon Parkin grabbing the winner on 74 minutes. If FGR can get Parkin scoring already early in the season a bright season lies ahead.
Tonight’s opponent Welling United is one of the smallest clubs in the league and will surely struggle for survival this season. They did manage to grab all three points against promoted side Guisely on the opening day of the season, but the gap in quality between the two teams tonight should just prove to be too big.
