Sri Lanka vs India

Sri Lanka started their challenge for the South Asian Championship title with a 1-0 injury time win against Nepal. In what looked set for a 0-0 draw, the Sri Lankans hit Nepal on the counter to claim a surprising win after having been put under pressure for most of the 90 minutes. You could say their tactics worked to perfection as they have a very defensive approach to games and try to hit teams on counter attacks. Today they take on hosts India in the second match in the group stage in what is likely to prove an even more difficult task. As two out of three teams will progress to the final stages (Pakistan withdrew from the tournament), Sri Lanka coach Sampath said he is likely to rest Mohammad Hakeem and Subash Madhusha, who both received yellow cards against Nepal, in order not to risk them missing a potential semi final.

Tournament hosts India are along with Afghanistan favorites to lift the SAFF title this year. India coach Stephen Constantine have however decided to bring a rather young squad this year, consisting mainly of players under the age of 23. He has called all time leading scorer  Sunil Chhetri though and he will captain a side full of enthusiasm which also includes rising star striker Jeje Lalpekhlua. Injuries on Sandesh Jhingan, Cavin Lobo and Seityasen Singh have weakened the squad somewhat but there should be enough quality still to run out winners in today.
