Rio 2016 Olympics officially gets under way with the opening ceremony on Friday, but women’s soccer kicks off already tonight. In Group F, Zimbabwe take on top tipped Germany in what could turn out to be a one-sided affair. Zimbabwe are not likely to cause any of the teams in the group (Canada and Australia being the other) any trouble and are more than anything else hoping not to get embarrassed.
The Mighty Warriors have only played once since arriving in Rio, a 0-3 defeat to China, and are likely to set their sights on keeping Germany from getting into double digits.
Germany are going for gold in Rio and have picked a very strong squad, including the likes of Anja Mittag, Nadine Angerer and Alexandra Popp, to feature in the games. The fact that the teams are only allowed 18 players meant that stars like Pauline Bremer, Meike Kämper, Lena Petermann and Felicitas Rauch, missed out. The 18 that are in Rio surely only have one thing in mind though and the German ladies should definitely be considered as one of the main contenders for the gold medals.
Germany prepared for the games by trashing Ghana 11-0 and should simply run circles around their opponent from start to finish here.
